I never thought it would happen but my 90 300zx TT, caught fire under the hood. Here is a quick story of what happened and I want to know what made it happen, what can be done about it, what more potential damage I could have done without noticing.Well tonite I was driving and later through the evening, I started to feel some rumble in the exhaust. I was driving normal and didnt even boost at all through the nite. I just replaced my water pump so I just wanted to take it easy. I thought maybe there was some buildup in the exhaust or it was just too hot here in Boston tonite or maybe bad gas even though I always use Vpower. After later on it would drive normal, but then again it started bogging power at the beginning and felt like it was running on 5 cylinders again. I thought a coil could have gone bad but I just replaced them all a while ago. Then the car started to really have a rumble and lose power and at a red light I noticed some smoke. I popped the hood and start smoke coming from under the plenum, behind the engine and right from the coil packs. I Said O No, the engin e is probably gonna go or i thought I blew a gasket but again driving it like a baby. I get to park it in front of my work and more smoke was coming out and looked like from the exhaust too. I popped the hood and saw a fire right on top of the plenum on the drivers side behind the equalizer air bar. The wire harness there was on fire and below it too was on fire. I went and got water and was able to put it out before it got worse. Earlier on I saw my PTU spark here and there saying What the hell is going on, when I also replaced it new. Now the questions. What could have caused that wire if you know which one it is, to cause a fire and start burning? Did a loose wire get in contact with it their from the harness or exhaust or turbo heat? What other possible damage could I have done? Could it have possibly fried anything else on the harness? Did the Coils fry also? PTU? And last but not least. Anything with the motor internally that could have or is it just a big electrical issue? Its gonna drive me nuts now for the next few days and Im just thinking whether I should get rid of the car or start my plans early to put it away now rather than winter to break it all down and rebuild everything? Will it be worth it or should I say BYEBYE to the Z? I know this post is long but I just want everyone to read and understand every possible issue that could have caused it, or if something similar has happened to someone before. Let me know on what actions should I take. I do have a new Engine harness waiting at home to get installed. Should I do it and think the car will run fine or rip everything apart and rebuilt and then put in the new harness. All the help from everyone will be greatly appreciated as soon as possible and have everyones support on what actions should be done and what will be worth it. Thanks for all the help and advice anyone can give me.
